intel core i7 220x189 i3, i5, and i7; Dual, Quad, Hexa Core Processors. How to they Differ?Windows Forums member, Bert_H, asked the following question in our suggestion box:

[I’d like] an explanation on i3, i5, i7 Operating Systems, and how they compare with Core 2 and Quad Core CPUs.

Update: Manuel commented asking the following:

It seems core2 duo CPUs have not been included and where they belong. Are core 2 duo CPUs comparable with i3s or even i5s? thanks.

If you’re in the market to buy a PC and you’re looking for the best value for money, you’ve likely asked yourself: “what’s the difference between Dual and Quad Core and which should I buy, i5, or i7?”

This guide offers a basic explanation of these processors and will help you determine the best for your needs.

This guide will answer the following questions:

  • What is a processor?
  • What is a core?
  • What is a multi-core processor?
  • Why do I need multiple cores?
  • How many cores do i3, i5, and i7’s have?
  • How Do Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Compare with Core i3, i5, and i7?
  • What Does the “i” Stand for in i3, i5, and i7?
  • Do I need an i3, i5, or i7?

What is a Processor?

The Processor or Central Processing Unit (CPU) component of your PC carries out instructions given to it by your Operating System (Windows.) Think of the processor as a brain that receives instructions and messages (i.e. “HOT HOT HOT Burning!!!”) and sends out instructions to other hardware (i.e. “Arm: lift hand” or “mouth: open; vocal chords: scream.”)

What is a Core?

A standard processor has one core (single-core.) Single core processors only process one instruction at a time (they do use pipelines internally, which allow several instructions to be processed together; however, they are still run one at a time.)

What is a Multi-Core Processor?

A multi-core processor is comprised of two or more independent cores, each capable of processing individual instructions. A dual-core processor contains two cores, a quad-core processor contains four cores, and a hexa-core processor contains six cores.

Why do I Need Multiple Cores?

Multiple cores can be used to run two programs side by side and, when an intensive program is running, (AV Scan, Video conversion, CD ripping etc.) you can utilize another core to run your browser to check your email etc.

Multiple cores really shine when you’re using a program that can utilize more than one core (called Parallelization) to improve the program’s efficiency and addressability. Programs such as graphic software, games etc. can run multiple instructions at the same time and deliver faster, smoother results.

If you use CPU-intensive software, multiple cores will likely provide a better computing experience. If you use your PC to check emails and watch the occasional video, you really don’t need a multi-core processor.

How many cores do i3, i5, and i7’s have?

  • An i3 processor has two cores
  • An i5 processor has two or four cores (depending on the model you have)
  • An i7 processor has two, four, or six cores (depending on the model you have)

How Do Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Compare with Core i3, i5, and i7?

Added 2012/01/21:

If you’re looking for a good value PC and have decided on a Core 2 Duo, Core i3, or Core i5 (all best in value for casual computer use), please read on:

Core 2 Duo processors run two threads; i3’s and i5’s run four threads. Core 2 Duo processors are socket 775 (45/65nm); Core i3 and i5 processors are socket 1156 (nm) but only work with DDR3 RAM (Some Core 2 Duo’s work with both DDR2 and DDR3.)

For desktops, I’d stay clear of core 2 duos due to their lack of power and compatibility with the newest PC hardware; for laptops, it all depends on your usage. As laptops aren’t as easy to upgrade, buying dated technology might burn you in the future when you find your Core 2 Duo PC’s motherboard only supports 4GB RAM—for example.

i5’s come with “turbo boost”; however, i3’s overclock very well if that’s your thing. That’s where I’d put my money if you’re considering Core 2 Duo, i3, and i5: the i3 provides the best value for most casual PC users.

While I focused on i3, i5, and Core 2 Duo to answer a reader’s question, the principles apply when comparing i5, i7, and Core 2 Quad. I’d go for the i5 unless you are willing to pay a premium for a little more performance.

What’s the Difference between i3/i5/i7 Generations?

To find out what’s new with the second generation of i3, and i5, and i7 processors, read more about Sandy Bridge here.

To find out what’s new with the third generation of i3, and i5, and i7 processors, read more about Ivy Bridge here.

What Does the “i” Stand for in i3, i5, and i7?

Added 2012/03/03:

I searched around the web and found speculation that the “i” stands for “Intel”; however, there’s no substantiation to that claim. After coming up with no explanation, I sent an email to Intel tech support. Here’s what they had to say (emphasis added):

Hello Rich,

Thank you for contact Intel(R) Technical Support.

We have received your request. Please be informed that the letter ‘i’ on the model number of the Processor does not stand for any particular detail, technology or feature presented on the product.

This is just a marketing brand name decision. For any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us back.

Thank you for your understading (sic).

Sincerely,

Alvaro A.

The i# processors are just branded that way with no special meaning.

Do I need an i3, i5, or i7?

The reason you’re reading this guide is to find out which type of processor you need. I want to give a simple answer and, if you have more to add, please let us know in the comments. As with all computer hardware, the type of processor you need depends on your needs, for how long you want your computer to stay current, and your budget.

Here’s a very simple breakdown of what you should look to buy depending on your computing needs. All suggestions assume you are buying a pre-built PC (so you don’t have to worry about motherboard and RAM specs and so you don’t have to worry about upgrade compatibility.)

If you:

  • Browse the internet, check email, and play the occasional flash game (like Farmville): Get a single core netbook or desktop (and don’t spend more than $300 USD — Updated 12/01/21.)
  • Do word processing, spreadsheets etc., listen to music often, and watch movies, get an i3 processor (or any dual core processor i.e. core 2 duo)
  • Play the occasional game and are happy with lower resolution and lower quality graphics (my suggestion assumes the graphics processor on the pre-built PC will be well-matched for the processor suggestions), watch HD movies etc., get an i5.
  • If you do graphic publishing, music creation, programming (and compiling), watch HD movies, or like to play visually appealing games, get a quad core i5, or i7.
  • If you like to have the very best hardware and play the most graphically intense games, get a quad core or hexa corei7 Extreme.

I realise my suggestions are somewhat generic but should point you in the right direction. If you have a specific question, please ask us in the forums where we can help you find the right processor for you.

So… What Computer Should I Purchase?

It is very good advices and infrmations. I know all of them but I really wonder (I need a high-end laptop) that I have to wait for buying a high-end laptop or not? What can you say about buying a mobile i7 core laptop within last release ATI radeon mobile 5800-5900 card series? Do I wait for new ones or quick buy a laptop? I think a loptop like ASUS G73 newegg links is
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item…
What can you say about this kind laptop buy or wait?

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

You can spend years waiting for the next best thing. Prices are adjusted to current value so I'd say look for coupon codes/discounts and go for it.

  • Joe

    Hey Blue,

I know someone in my class that has that G73 laptop and he isn't a gamer. He loves it, but he didn't like the placement of the slot for the power cord going into the laptop. It is in an akward place and may get loose when plugging it in and out. Other than that, everything ran beyond his expectations… Enjoy!

    Note: [For Notebook buying users]

i5 mobile processors, ALL have only 2 real cores.
i7 mobile processors up to the i7-660, ALL have 2 real cores.
i7-660 and higher mobile processors ALL have 4 real cores.

    as of today (17/08/2010)

Hi there, a nice informative post. I'm having a HP laptop 3 yr old with Turion processor and I'm looking for an upgrade now. would like to go for i3 or i5. I watch HD movies and often convert HD movies to DVD shot in Canon consumer grade camcorder, other than this no major gaming or the like. Which processor shud I go for?? seeing the cost i3 is cheaper but with i3 can i do this conversion etc.

Or in AMD which is the equivalent processor which i shud look for??

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

    Good to know. Thank you!

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

An i3 will do this, but if you're doing this a lot, go for an i5.

I am not current with AMD processors (I always buy Intel.)

    Thanks Rich..

nice post.. I have core2duo processor on my laptop.. i guess its the same dual core with a different branding?

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

Yes this is a dual core processor (I also have a Core 2 Duo on my laptop and find it is quick enough for my needs.)

    • stevestylez

hey, mac says the dual cores ii5/i7 run two treads at the same time on one core, so in turn its like having quad-core, is that accurate for them to say? also im saving up for a mbp, mainly i will be editing with final cut studio and adobe CS5, also i’ll be learning how to use logic for my musical needs. my specs so far for this dream machine are as follows:
8 gigs ram—17”—i5 or i7—500 gig hd 7200 rpm and whatever is the best graphics card which i think is the geforce 330m. will my specs line up with the power and performance i want it for? is the 330m the best graphics card? do any programs need more than 4 gigs of ram to opperate at optimum levels? will i see a difference in speed with the 2.66 and 2.8 i7 processors? i dont know if im stating this right but what the difference between intel integrated graphics and nvidia graphics? this information will cap off my knowledge for the specs i want and help me make a more informed decision on the over priced mac-lol-thanks

      • http://richr.org/ Rich

I’d have to research to answer all of these questions accurately. Please ask these questions in the forums and we’ll be happy to look into them: http://forum.mintywhite.com

  • Sandip_mane

Hello Rich, just a simple question I would like to ask?

Can I compare Core 2 Duo T9300 2.53 Ghz with 6 MB cache with any of the models of i5?? I was looking for something using which I can compare core 2 duo with i3,5,7

    good job in article. thx

    • http://richr.org/ Rich

A Core to Duo T9300 is comparable to a high end i3 or low end i5. I can’t cite specific models but hope this gets you in the right ballpark.

  • Pirouz

Is it possible to replace my i5 5xxM (dual core) with i7 7xxQM (quad core) on my laptop?

    • http://richr.org/ Rich

Possibly but it depends on what motherboard you have.

  • Kimcheolho

I’m just wondering. Can an i3 core play a full HD movie without any problems? I have a lowend dual core (1.7 ghz) and it can’t do full HD movies.

    • http://richr.org/ Rich

Possibly. Too many factors come in to play like operating system, running programs, graphics acceleration/hardware etc. The best thing to do is try before you buy :)

    • zerosix

playing full HD movies does not depend on processor alone although it is possible for an i3 pc to play Full HD movies.

first to consider is your graphics engine/adapter. see specifications on maximum display resolution. it should give you an idea if it can support 1080p display.

second would be of course your display or your monitor. it should also support 1080p. most LCD or LED now a days is built to support full HD, check for FullHD logos on the monitor features.

so even if if you have an i3 processor you should still be able to play HD movies with good graphics capability although i would recommend you get an i5 since it has turbo boost technologies where i3 doesn’t and also HD graphics processing.

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

    You’re very welcome.

  • Varun

ur explanation is so sweet & crispy, thanks dude……

I am purchasing a new desktop computer with Intel® Core? i7-860 Processor.
I want to know is this dual or quad core? or is it single?
    thank you,

  • http://profiles.google.com/ravi.verma.ucer ravi verma

my question is that if i pick 2 processors like Quad core & i5 (4 core) then i want to ask what else the difference is left and if they are same then why intel selling 2 diffent names with same quality ????

    • zerosix

the core processors from intel varies on the L2 cache, frequency and also other intel technologies that boosts performance.

for example the core 2 quad has smaller L2 cache than i5 quad core
also i5 processors has other perofrmance technologies like Turbo Boost which is like temporarily overclocking the frequency of the processor to meet application demands and it also has hyper threading, supports HD grahics parallel processing etc. which are not present on earlier core technologies.

  • Colleen

that info was ver very helpful thanks now i have a better idea at what i need.

hi, i am wanting to upgrade my 6 yr old laptop and so i guess anything i buy now will be faster and better. currently now i cant even download and watch a 2 min u tube video – it takes 1/2hr to download and then i miss most of the video because of pauses. I basically want to watch stuff off u tube, watch episodes of tv shows like survivor, put my holiday photos to music and then general emailing and wordprocessing. should i get a i3 or i5. thanks

  • Joe

Hello.May I know what is the difference between i5 dual core and i7 dual core??

  • Ajay

    thanks for the information.
but , then what is the difference in dual core and i3, both have 2 cores only!   y n hw they r different?

  • MLBB58

This helped  but here is a basic question that should know but would like some input on.   I do spreadsheets on my computer, I do not play games and such on this computer ,I have another I use for that operation.  what I want is to know what would be the best type of computer for fast uptake and downloads and saves plus opening the info without waiting forever.  I will 7 or 8 spreadsheets open at one time and get really irked having it take forever to save it or bring up something from the internet .  I have a toshiba 17.5 inch but want a 15, the one I have now has a dual core pentium with 4gb memory and is slower than I can stand  suggestions

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

You should definitely do a cost analysis and see what’s more worth it. Will
the new mb support your RAM? Will you need to upgrade your power supply?
Will all peripherals (DVD drive, card reader etc work?) is the mb going to
fit in your old case (probably will.)

Once you have costs, then see if the anticipated performance gains are worth
    it.

  • Howard9998

    (sigh)

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

You won’t see much improvement with a quad core but I also dont think you’ll
regret getting one. You sound like you use your computer enough to buy a
decent quad core. If budget is a contstraint, go for a faster dual core but
otherwise go for a quad :)

  • Donald Gaga

    thanks man for this explainetion:D

  • Andali

    Awesome explanation, thanks :)

  • Chigzy

So hard to find an easy to follow explanation aimed at the enthusiastic amateur… Good job!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=836422957 Harry Abramowski

one year later and your article still holds up as a worthy explanation.  For most people cost is the factor that leads. Who wouldnt buy a i7 six core laptop if it was just a $100 more?  Having more cores than you need has no negative effects. the dual and quad cores are the last generations multi-cores while the i3,i5,i7 are the current generation. If you always buy premade pcs – and DO NOT ever consider upgrading the CPU – then you can view dual or quad cores as equal to i3 or i5 when you apply this articles rules above. BUT if you like to upgrade the insides until theres no more to upgrade – ONLY THEN does a desktop with core 2 duo dual or quad get REMOVED from the list, leaving only the i3 etc desktops. thats because desktops that use (core 2 duo) CPUs cannot accept the newer i3, i5 or i7 CPUs as replacements.

  • http://richr.org/ Rich

The ability to play “graphics intense games” is more determined your GPU, not CPU. This is, of course, an oversimplification, but, fundamentally, this statement is true. I wouldn’t couple an i3 540 with a good graphics card–you’d be wasting money on GPU overhead that the CPU cannot match/utilize.
