Maximize Privacy in Windows Media Player 11 in Windows 7

Like most media players, Windows Media Player sends messages home to media player’s servers to retrieve track information, usage rights, and more. If you would like to protect your privacy, follow this guide.

Note: These guides are written for the Windows Seven Ultimate RC1 (build 7100.) As further builds are released, these guides may be subject to change and will be updated accordingly. If the methods described below do not work, please don’t hesitate to ask our experts in the forums.

Configuring Privacy When Setting up WMP11 for the First Time

To configure privacy settings, when setting up WMP11 for the first time, do the following:

  1. Click on the Windows Media Player icon on the Superbar

  2. Select Custom Settings and click Next

  3. Adjust the privacy options accordingly. Review the screenshot, below, for my recommendations. Click Next.

  4. Choose whether or not to make Windows Media Player your default media player. Click Finish.

Your privacy is now protected when viewing and listening to media.

Configuring Privacy After WMP11 is Set Up

To configure privacy settings, after WMP11 is already set up, do the following:

  1. Click on the Windows Media Player icon on the Superbar

  2. On the Windows Media Player screen, Press the ALT, and click Tools > Options…

  3. Under the Privacy tab, configure your privacy settings. Review the screenshot, below, for my recommendations. Click OK.

Your privacy is now protected when viewing and listening to media.
