One of the most common complaints of computer users across the world is that they find computer error messages to be complicated and hard to understand. This is partly true as most computer error messages do not clearly spell out cause of error and its possible solution. However, certain error messages do leave certain clues in the form of error codes, which not only computer experts, but any common user can use in order to solve PC problems.

These error codes may look like a random collection of numbers and letters, but they are your best bet in solving the error yourself. This article shows you how to effectively use computer error codes to solve your PC problems.

The first thing you must do when an error code is generated is to perform a search on a reliable search engine such as Google, Yahoo or Bing. The results may direct you to the Microsoft Knowledgebase or a third-party solution website. You may also find links to third-party help websites and message forums. Most of the time you will be able to find a solution to your problem on these websites. Once you find it, implement the solution to resolve your error.

The following are some of the additional tasks that you can perform to fix as well as prevent errors on your computer.

Clean your Windows Registry

Generally, errors such as error 2739 and stop error c000021a occur due to a damaged or corrupt registry. To repair these errors and fix any registry issues, you should clean your registry using a reliable registry cleaning utility.

Perform a Malware Scan

Malware programs, like viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, and worms may also cause various errors, such as the error 0x80040702. To troubleshoot errors that occur due to malware infection, remove malware from your PC. To achieve this, scan your entire computer using advanced and top-rated antivirus and antispyware tools.

Additionally, to secure your computer against harmful programs, regularly update your security tools with the latest malware definitions and security updates.

Install the latest Windows Updates

The error that you are facing may have been addressed in the latest Windows update pertaining to your Windows operating system. That is why it is prudent to download and install the new Windows updates and security patches, as and when they are released by Microsoft.

Certain error codes point to driver-related problems. You can resolve various driver-related issues by updating your drivers. An easy and convenient way of ensuring that you use the latest device drivers is by installing a reliable third-party driver scanner tool.

Incompatible or outdated software may cause various application errors. Therefore, ensure that software programs installed on your PC are current and compatible with your Windows operating system. Furthermore, ensure that you do not use conflicting software, for instance do not deploy two different antivirus suites on your PC.

Install New Programs Correctly and Completely

Incorrect or incomplete installation of programs may also cause various errors. When you install a new program, ensure that the installation files are not damaged or corrupt. Furthermore, if you are installing new software using an installation disc, make sure that the installation disc is not scratched or damaged.

Similarly, when you uninstall a program ensure its complete removal. A complete removal means all the files, registry entries, and processes related to the program are also removed from your system. One way of achieving this is by using a reliable uninstaller tool, such as Perfect Uninstaller to uninstall unwanted and unused programs.

Run the Chkdsk Command

If the error code points to hard disk related issues, run the chkdsk command, available in Windows XP and Windows Vista. Chkdsk is a command line utility that allows Windows users to repair issues related to bad hard disk sectors, lost clusters, and cross-linked files.
