The Difference Between BAT- and VBS-files

Posted by Thomas On October - 19 - 2010

You might have seen it being used in some of the tips here on mintywhite. But what are BAT- and VBS-files, and what is the difference between them ?

The short version is that both kinds are small script files that can be used to execute functions or to do repetitive tasks. BAT is short for BATCH-file and is a very simple script-language from back then, when DOS was the ultimate PC OS. Some years later Microsoft decided (after much pun from the Linux, and Unix communities) to upgrade the functionality, thus creating VBS.

Device Doctor Scans and Updates Your Computer’s Drivers

Posted by Thomas On October - 9 - 2010

Keeping our computer(s) up to speed is a never-ending story. Making sure you have the latest, most updated drivers can be a daunting task and many give up on it. There are many tools out there promising to help you take care of this for you. Most of these sites and tools prove to be frauds, either overcharging you for free drivers, or installing old or useless drivers, causing more problems than they solve.

I stumbled upon this neat trick a little while ago and thought it would be a good share for the rest of you “Media Junkies” out there.  While we do have to wait a little over a week to get Google TV here in the states, which will combine over-the-air broadcast TV from your set-top box and videos you can access over the net, this little fix brings that to you now if you’re running Windows Media Center. It combines the beauty and ease of use from Windows Media Center with the vast amounts of content available on Hulu.

Please be sure to check the license for each pack you download as each differs. The license should be available from the site you’re led to and often it’s in the download. If you know of any good icon packs to include in this genre, please let me know. Looking for a different genre? Desktop icon pack collections organized by genre.

Lock Windows Account on multiple login fails

Posted by Thomas On October - 3 - 2010

What’s one of the most common ways to get unauthorized access to someone else’s computer – especially that of a friend or family member? By guessing the password!

Someone who knows you well may be able to figure out your password, especially if he can try different possibilities before hitting on the right one.

If you’re running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate edition (or the equivalent edition of Vista), you can set your Windows account to temporary lock if someone enters the wrong password several times in a row.

Techniques for Cooling your Computer

Posted by Thomas On September - 18 - 2010

Last time I addressed this topic it was to come up with a few things that can make your computer running smoother. This time I’ve found a series of projects of the more experimental kind. Keeping your computer clean, is something anyone can do, but rebuilding (partly or complete) it might be out of your league. But a fun read still. You’ve probably heard about water cooling systems, but what about mineral oil, or liquid nitrogen ? I didn’t think so… Read the rest of this entry »
