There is a negative stigma with Torrent files; however, this medium of transport is becoming more popular and is used for legitimate reasons. For example: distribution of Windows 7 Beta and RC , the Windows books I’ve written and Linux. Plus, many companies and bands use Torrents to distribute their files.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to set up a Torrent download manager and where to get legitimate torrents.

Note: This guide is part of the Windows Guides’ Legal File Sharing Series. If you want to find out more about file sharing, check the topics covered here.

The first step downloading legal files via torrents is to attain torrent downloading software. There are many clients out there that you can use; however, I have always used µTorrent and have never had any problems with it. Follow the link below to download µTorrent. Once downloaded, install µTorrent on your PC.

The next step, is to start downloading files.

Please note: I do not condone illegal file sharing and warn that engaging in such activity will likely lead to computer viruses, loss of data, song artists living on the streets,  software developers busking in subways, and maybe even a lawsuit. Please consider this your warning from me.

Each site will differ in its approach to deliver torrent files to you. As long as the site you’re downloading from can be trusted, you should usually look out for a download arrow or a download button like the one shown below.

Because you previously installed µTorrent, .torrent files we’ll be associated with the program; thus, downloading a .torrent file should automatically open µTorrent.
