outlook password

I use Outlook at work and no matter how many times I check the Remember Password box, Outlook/Outlook Express does not remember my password and I have to type it every time. In this guide I have included a fix for this problem. This guide is for Windows XP an Vista users.

Please Note: This guide involves working with the Windows Registry. If this is your first time editing the registry, please read this guide to get you started. Learn how to backup and restore your registry here.

1. Hold the Windows Key and Press R. (Or click Start > Run)

2. Type Regedit and press enter.

3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Protected Storage System Provider \

4. Right-click on Protected Storage System Provider, and from the menu choose Permissions…

5. On the Security tab, press the Advanced button

6. On the Permissions tab, XP Users select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box. Vista Users select the Replace all existing inheritable permissions on all descendents with inheritable permissions from this object. Click Apply, and then click Yes on the Security warning dialog

7. Under the Name column heading, ensure that the user currently logged on has Full Control access.

8. Click OK. The following message appears: Do you want to replace the permission on all existing subkeys within Protected Storage System Provider?

9. Select Yes and press OK on the permissions box.

10. Now in the registry editor, double-click the Protected Storage System Provider key to expand the key, click the user subkey folder that is directly below Protected Storage System Provider key.

outlook password

11. Press the Delete key.

12. Click Yes in the warning message dialog box
Note: There may be many subkeys depending on how many users you have. You will need to delete all of these keys.

13. Close the registry editor

14. The changes will take effect next time you restart your computer.

15. Start Outlook/Outlook express, enter your password when prompted, and select Remember Password – your problem will be solved.

Hi, I have tried the method a few times, and it just didn’t work for me, I have even try to create another email account using Outlook express with the same setting that work before the problem, and it still won’t work for me, so i got to resort to web mail. Any other way to help? Please!

    Sean,

I’m not sure this method works for Outlook Express too (I’ve not tested it and I don’t have a machine to test it on right now.)

Head over to the forums and I’m sure you’ll get a solution.

I had the same problem (XP). I tried all kind of possible solutions from the internet, including ideas above. In my case, the problem was that my internet security options were too strict. I set them all to low and had no problems with the password. I then increased the settings to a level compatible with Outlook.
Control Panel – Internet Options – Privacy – use the slider.

Thank you so much for this. I was getting so annoyed with putting in a password each time.

    Rich,
I was refered to this sight my a hotmail specialist who is trying to help me resolve problems since updating to the pop3 sever. When I followed the process the first time, everything seemed to happen as you described. I rebooted, opened Outlook2002 entered the passwords, closed Outlook and rebooted again, it did not work. I once again had to retype the passwords.
I tried to follow the process again and this time recieve an error message at step 6 above. When I click apply, I a window pops up saying, “Registry editor could not set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.”
The problems with using my Hotmail account since switching over to pop3 are extremely aggrevating and have been going on for over a month with no resolution. Do you have any further suggestions?
    I use Vista 6.0, service pack 2 w/Outlook2002.

Short of uninstalling Outlook and reinstalling it, I don’t have any suggestions. From your description, you’ve applied the guide without luck. Is reinstalling Outlook an option?

Look at post #10. I’d post the whole thing in here but it’s really long. Rich you can delete my first two posts if you want.
