If the world ends, this will be our last iteration of Windows available to the public. Given that the world probably won’t end—and, by end, I of course infer “cease[s] to exist”—this will be a closer look into to the ever-changing future of “PC” technology.

Long story short, Ballmer refers to the next version of Windows and “Windows 8″ and says it will be released “next year.”

I do not understand that what will be the
operating systems which are displayed in present sci-fi movies. If Microsoft
does not provide any new OS day by Day, then there should be a new organization
who will meet up the requirement for new generation.

Very true. There’s a lot more competition these days :) Thanks for your input Fayez.

This, uh, this was taken a bit out of context Rich.

Ballmer did indeed use the Windows 8 moniker, however he did not say it would be released next year. The quote is:

“And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there’s a whole lot more coming.”

To which he is likely referring to next gen computers that run Windows, not necessarily Windows 8. While Windows 8 is slated to come out next year, we knew that beforehand. Just saying, he didn’t specify Windows 8 is coming out next year :p

I recall my memory using windows XP with 128MB RAM, just
five years back and now as a little (actually very little) IT man, I have 4GB RAM.
I am looking for another 2GB next week, because of my Virtual Environments (2008
R2 with two virtual machines inside it). So, Microsoft can’t imagine how much I
loved them, there is no such organization in the world who tolerates millions of
pirated copy in several nations in Africa and Asia but do nothing against them
just because of thinking their poor financial infrastructure. Yes they have (Microsoft)
earns Billions of Dollars and they do it from their Brains not using any wrong.
One thing need to be mentioned that Microsoft has lot of opportunity to make
monopoly environment in various IT field but they did not do it. That’s why I
like them. So, There is far to go in the future. After a true successful
campaign of windows 7 at October, 2009 there should be at least 5-6 years
difference (2015) for windows 8. Then we will found a new platform like DOS – 95
    - XP – w7. If windows-8 comes so early then it could be a wrong decision like
Vista did. After a successful campaign of w7, people won’t like to switch
    windows-8 so early.  Microsoft should
have wait to see for the upcoming hardware, like I have core i-7 with
windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. I would like to use a lighting first new
processor with new windows. Say I am in front of my pc. I am saying “My
    computer/F drive/ Noman Songs/ Michel Jacson/ Just beat it” open it-media
player. Then computer will starts the songs within a second. I do
not think so that windows-8 will meet up my requirements like that. So,
why do people pay for windows 8 just because of some update with w7?
