I have an installation of Windows 7 running really well, on 512MB RAM*, without any problems at all. I must say: “I am very impressed by this operating system.”
UPDATE: More information on running Windows 7 on 512MB RAM under normal use here.
See the task manager performance log below to see how the resources are being used. If you have an older system running on Windows XP (because Vista requires too much of the system), you may want to try Windows 7.
Find out how to get a 30 day (can be extended to 120 days) trial here
*I am not using Aero and only have core programs installed.

I’m running Win 7 RC 32 bit on an old Hp A450n Pentium 4 / 3.0 GHz: 1 gig memory, with HyperThreading Technology, 800 MHz front side bus, and it is running flawlessly, never been happier with an OS.
Gotta love Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1300 with 1.6Ghz Celeron M processor and 512Mb of RAM. I reckon I won’t be doing much video-editing or Photoshopping (I should’ve said won’t be doing any at all) on there, but the machine is really responsive, even more in my opinion than when it ran XP SP3. I’ll be buying the boxed version as soon as it goes on sale!

Which Sound Driver I use to play the sound. I am using P4 with the OS of Win 7. I have 512 MB of RAM. My basic driver are not running well..
Im running Windows 7 Ultimate ***Media Center Edition*** on a 512MB RAM and it works fine =D, without aero and has tweaks to make the computer faster.
Check my document about the computer including specs here:
Have fun!
centrino dothan 2ghz 512mb ram. Internet and office even faster than xp. Disabled aero and some other services.
Installed Windows 7 Ultimate (SP1) on an old laptop running an AMD Turion processor and just 512 MB of RAM.
To sumarize – it worked fine! :) I installed with IE9, and added FireFox 4 and Chrome after installation. Everything works fine and in fact it works a amazingly faster than Vista did on the same laptop previously.
I use this systemjust for web browsing and watching movies. For those purposes, it’s running beautifully smooth. For the techie people to note, there is a bit of hard disc activity going on (must be the page file) but that is expected on a system with just 512 MB RAM (in fact it only has 448 MB as 64 MB is being used by the video card)
Microsoft certainly got their OS tweaked right with Windows 7 ! :)
Thank you Franci. Really appreciate you sharing you experience with Windows 7 on limited system resources.
I remember when 512 mb was a lot of memory!
this is fake… windows 7 cant control programs with less than 1gb ram. windows xp is best if u have less than 1gb ram
It’s real.
