On April 25, 2008, Microsoft introduced the next version of its Windows XP operating system, detailing revamped plans for the business built around the platform, a brand overhauling and the road map for upcoming products. However, the desktop version of Windows XP got no play as the Redmond company focused entirely on the embedded version of the platform. The
Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley 2008 in San Jose was also synonymous with the introduction of the Windows Embedded Ready, a brand umbrella for the company’s forthcoming key device products.

Windows XP SP3 Release Dates

With Service Pack 3 for Windows XP just over the horizon, we’ve managed to get our hands on the internal schedule for the release of the highly anticipated update to the aging operating system. As you can see in the list below, most of the stages will occur before the end of the month, though forced automatic updates won’t land until June. This delay should give system administrators an ample amount of time to prepare for the upgrade or simply come up with an excuse when things go awry.

  • April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
  • April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
  • April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
  • June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates

Windows Vista (Product) Red reaches new heights

Product Red(PRODUCT)RED-branded products usually cost the same as their “non-(RED)” counterparts. However, a percentage of each (PRODUCT)RED product sold is given to The Global Fund, which helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Windows and Dell have together joined (RED) to help the cause: the two companies contribute $50 to $80 of each Dell (PRODUCT)RED PC with Windows Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT)RED sold.

Microsoft Exec Rages Against Vista Upgrade ‘Hack’

Sarcasm can be a powerful tool, and a Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) executive recently wielded it against industry sources who claim that a loophole exists in one of the software giant’s licensing policies.In a scathing blog post last week, Eric Ligman, Microsoft’s senior manager of community engagement for small business in the U.S., took aim at reports that Microsoft is giving users the option of buying the Vista SP1 upgrade edition and installing it on any PC, which allows them to avoid paying more than $100 for the more expensive ‘full’ edition of Vista.
