You might remember our review of WinXDvd Ripper back in May this year. The developers of WinXDvd Ripper kindly gave away some 30 licenses for our readers.  This time I want to tell you about WinXdvd Rippers bigger brother the WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe. If you have invested big money in the latest HD ready equipment, it would be a shame to miss out on the great quality when you convert your backup your Blu-Rays or DVDs. That’s where WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe comes in handy.

I’ve used this program for a while now and it never impresses to amaze me. Creating a backup (or converting and old DVD) is done in three clicks. The interface is as intuitive as I have come to expect from Digiarity – and the default settings are more than tweaked enough to let anyone create HD backups. Without any prior knowledge about Bit Rate, Sample rate, Kbps, Formats, Codecs etc. Insert your original disk, choose your desired output, and click START.

Differences between WinX DVD Ripper and HD Video Converter

The DVD Ripper focus on converting your DVD collection to various file formats such as AVI, MP4, MPEG,WMV, FLV, MOV and Zune. The HD Video Converter focus more on which device you are going to use when playing your copies. Each Device has their own prefered settings and with HD Video Converter you don’t need to use the TFTA (Try Fail Try Again) method.

HD Video Converter also has a website video function to convert your videos to and from sites like YouTube, MySpace, Metacafe etc.

Support and Speed is of the essence

In addition to DVD, the program Support Blu-ray, M2TS, BDAV, TrueHD, M2TS, MTS, MPEG-TS Aduio/Video. You can easily convert Blu-ray M2TS to AVI, BDAV M2TS to MP4 DVD, a definitely useful feature when making a digital copy to back up your Blu-ray videos. You may also convert Panasonic Canon Sony HD-Camcorder video AVCHD MOD TOD MTS to AVI MPEG MP4, JVC MOD to AVI and other most popular video formats, so that you can play AVCHD on iPhone/iPod/iPad or burn it to DVD and edit the video in Windows Media Center.

WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe supports Multi-core CPU and Hyper-threading, which can offer you up to 5x‐15x real time converting speed.

Putting it to the test

Expecting the normal backup, converting and burning of disk to work flawless I decided to test the Converter on something a bit more unusual. I have a recorder (to record my favourite TV shows) that can be set to record in the more and more popular MKV codec. Now not all devices support this codec yet (and certainly not my old DVD-player). I decided to use HD Video Converter to convert my MKV files into plain old HD AVI. How did that turn out ?

The MKV codec isn’t just a different DivX and converting between the two can be quite tricky. The program has got a feature for auto correcting A/V sync problems which will catch minor deviations in the A/V sync. However it did not do anything good for a video where I the audio was un-synced with about 4000 milliseconds. Which of course is not what you encounter every day. I did experience some A/V sync problems after converting between the two formats, and would love to see the ability to manually control the offset.

Overall verdict

The program does what it promises to do, with honors. This is the best, easiest and most powerful tool I’ve tried so far. Converting should always be this easy.
