In this guest post, Eva Vesper explores Windows and Linux web hosting options. Learn more about Eva at the conclusion of this post.

There are many varieties of web hosting; in this article, we’ll take a look at Windows Web Hosting and start with explaining what it is and then comparing it to Linux Web Hosting. What are the pros and cons? Read on and you’ll get the answers.

What is Windows Web Hosting

Windows web hosting, running on the Windows Server 2008 Web Edition platform (released in February), has the intention of being a single-purpose solution for everybody from application developers to Internet service providers. It gives companies the opportunity of designing their websites through the immensely popular Windows operating system.

Technologies such as the new .NET infrastructure as well as the somewhat older Active Server Pages (ASP), MS Access, MSSQL and COM are allowed and possible when using Windows hosting. To make something that sounds very complicated easy we can say that it is a powerful web hosting solution that often comes at a good price.

Linux Web Hosting

Now, what about Linux hosting then? Well, it is a solution for webmasters who use Linux features when working, for example MySQL, PHP programming and Perl programming. Just as with Windows web hosting, Linux is a powerful solution that comes at a low price. Because of its affordable price and powerful solution is it today one of the most popular platforms.

Linux hosting allows its clients to build their web sites through its Linux operating system. It is a very popular platform that allows great flexibility through open-source technologies such as XML, Python and the already mentioned PHP and MySQL.

Which one Should You Choose?

We understand that it can be difficult to decide which one of these platforms you should choose. To tell you the truth, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose – there is not really that big of a
difference between the two of them. It depends on what your own intentions are.

Most web features will run fine on both platforms. However if you intend to create your website using the .NET and ASP environments you will be better off with a Windows web host. As Linux is open source does much come free but windows hosting is in no way a pricey affair. Features, reliability, security… they are both fairly close to each other so deciding upon the best is difficult to do. Chose what you are the most experienced in. Windows hsting and Linux hosting can often be obtained and run at the same time through one plan so look it up before making your purchase.
