Why is there not a USA UCI World Tour Stage?
Given I’m new to the sport, I don’t know much about the history of world road bike racing. For the first time, I watched the full Tour de France this year; I’m now catching up on the Tour de Pologne and my interest is peaked. I live in the US but grew up in the UK. I’ll spare you my background in biking but, needless to say, I’m hooked.
Why is there not a USA UCI World Tour stage?
What I’d Do
Disclaimer: I own a Trek Madone 6.9 SSL and ride for my local Trek store. I like Treks.
To start a tour in the US, I’d recommend one of Trek, Cannondale, or a new, seeded brand selling affordable American-made bikes around the world (and to Americans.) They would be sold at a premium (passed on from labor, land, utility, and material costs) but could be the flagship bikes and sponsor of the Tour of the United States/The Tour of the USA.
This would provide funding in the future but would take 4-7 years to become profitable. This would require a high risk investment (+17% int.) but would need just one or two passionate Americans with the resources to invest.
Two of the biggest barriers to entry to pro road cycling in America:
- The Tour de France is shown at inconvenient times
- Stages are long and usually take the stage winners 3-7 hours to complete
