Okay hey guys, Let build a computer. Sounds fun, its not.. :P

Okay lets see some good builds I will lay down some guidelines to follow..

First of PRICE! lets look at a budget of $1,000(USD)
Lets try to not go over the budget. a lil is okay more then 200 start over.

What we are looking for: Gaming, Fast, but reliable. Outstanding GFX ect...

Laptop or Tower? (monitor not included in budget)

Here is a layouts of what you should have, if you can provide the specs.

Core: Dual or Quad, (the cpu must have at least 2.8ghz to run Crysis)
Motherboard: Dual GFX or Quad GFX, PCI slots ePCI slots. Overclocking worthy?
RAM: DDR2 or DDR3? (how many GIG's 2,4,6,8?)
Drivers: Scuzzie's or Raptors, Raid 0 or Raid1? (how many Gigs/terabytes)(rpm 1500or less?)
GFXcards: ATI vs nVidia (probably need more then a 512bit)
Case: Dont need one. (laptop Include case & monitor in budget)

Not included in budget..
>>Software<<
Vista or Windows7? (probably windows7 :P)
Firewall?
Antivirus?
Optimizer?
Any other reasonable software that might be needed.

Will post my build later on..

The best build inside the budget gets, uhh, watch me post awsome gamming video's on youtube :P

I just built a PC, and for the record, it is kind of fun! My budget was half of what was proposed here, and let me run down what I got.

Apex Micro ATX case w/ 300W power supply
4 3.5 inch HDD slots
2 5.25 inch external drive slots
2 2.5 inch external drive slots
Gigabyte G41M-ES2L Micro ATX Motherboard
Integrated 7.1 channel sound
1MB Ethernet
3 SATA ports
Intel G41 Chipset
Integrated Intel X4500 Graphics (DirectX 10, Shader 4.0)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6300
2.8 GHz Clock Speed
1066 Front Side Bus
4 GB G.Skill DDR2 800 RAM
Western Digital Caviar Black Hard Drive
SATA 3 GB/s
640 GB
7200 RPM
Samsung DVD+RW Drive
Acer 19" widescreen LCD monitor
I already had speakers and a Microsoft wireless keyboard/mouse combo lying around.
I also "uncased" an external HDD that I had and threw it in there, it is a Seagate 160GB 7200 RPM drive that is hooked up by IDE.

It's running Vista Business with Windows Firewall (not to mention two more firewalls on the router and modem), and Avast! Antivirus Home Edition. It scores 4.0 on the Windows Experience Index, and the next lowest score is a 4.3. Those are both in graphics. Everything else is 5.2 and 5.9. As far as gaming goes, it's not too intense, but I have been testing it out playing Half-Life 2 on the highest settings with no overclocking at all and the core temperature has never gone over 30C with fans still running under capacity. The only thermal solution I have is the stock processor fan, the PSU fan and a 90mm case fan. There is room for a 120mm fan in the case still. Apparently with the motherboard software and this specific chip it can get up to 3.0 GHz without a problem with stock fans, and with a 120mm case fan people have gotten it up to 3.5 GHz. I got all that for $460. Pretty good huh? Dell doesn't have any PCs with Intel processors under $500 last time I checked. If you want all the specifics let me know and I can hook you up with my Newegg wishlist for the build.

As far as this "challenge" goes, for under $1000 I would go for nothing less than an Intel Core 2 Quad, 4-6GB of DDR3 memory, a hefty graphics card with 1GB of DDR5 graphics memory (different than RAM), 1TB of HDD space (this is a gaming PC, so I'm assuming we're not storing dozens of Blu-Ray movies on it) with no RAID. RAID is cool but not necessary for gaming... it would end up costing more. And as far as RPM goes, 15000 is a little excessive. If you want to stay under budget I would go no higher than 9000. Faster than that gets really pricy. Get a nice monitor and spend the rest of your money on your case and fans... because this thing will get HOT. Also, overclocking for gamers is a bit of a no-brainer now. You just do it. Most decent motherboards have good software for that and the processors can take it as long as the fans are there.
