One-Click Conversion to Device and Output Format

As before you can predefine  custom settings to suit your needs, but now PhotoMagician also comes with preset settings for the most common devices out there. But the most interesting new functionality is Format to Format Settings.

Set Default Conversion Rules for different formats.

PhotoMagician now let you decide which format get converted to which format. You can set Tiff to JPEG, PSD to PNG and so on. This is especially useful if your camera save photos in RAW format or its equals; DDS, PCX, PSD, TARGA, WBMP and WMF.

The traditional method of JB’ing would be to download software to your PC and run it with your device connected to your PC via USB.  What’s new about this JB, is that it all happens on the device making the whole process super easy!

Basically put, Jailbreaking your device breaks the Apple shackles and opens a whole new world of apps, themes, sounds & much much more!

The Jailbreak

Step 1.

Lets start by making sure everything is up to date. Connect your iDevice to your machine via USB and fire-up iTunes.

In iTunes, head to the toolbar and click Help > About iTunes. (At time of writing it should report 9.2.1.4)

In the navigation pane of iTunes, click on your device and then the summary tab.  Be sure it’s currently running one of the Software versions (firmware’s) outlined above.

Step 2.

Next up is to restore your device.  This isn’t a necessity but is recommended.

Click the Restore button (hold Shift & click if you have already downloaded your firmware.)

You’ll be asked to backup your device.  Choose whether you need to and click the appropriate button.

Then click Restore.

Step 3.

The restoration usually takes a while to complete.  Grab your self a coffee and patiently wait for the slowest device restoration in history!

Once it has finished, choose not to restore from backup and set up as a new iPhone.

Step 4.

Make sure you’re connected to a WIFI network, open Safari and head to this address; http://jailbreakme.com

Give the page a second to load and you’ll notice it says ‘Slide to Jailbreak’.  Slide the button and your JB will begin.  The process took about 5 minutes for me.

And that’s all there is to it.  Your iDevice is now Jailbroken and ready to rock!

The Unlock (iPhone Only)

This unlock will work for;

iPhone4

Baseband 01.59

3G/3GS

Basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04

To check which baseband you’re on; on your iPhone, go to Settings > General > About. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and under Modem Firmware be sure it reports a version as outlined above.

Step 1.

Open Cydia on your device.

When it’s done loading, click Manage > Sources > Edit (top right) > Add (top left).

In the address bar, enter this URL: repo666.ultrasn0w.com (the o in ultrasnow is a zero) and tap Add Source.

Wait for Cydia to reload all the necessary data and tap Return to Cydia.

Step 2.

At the Cydia homescreen, click Search and type in ultrasn0w

Tap the ultrasn0w from repo666, not SiNfuL

Tap Install > Confirm.

Wait for Cydia & ultrasn0w to do it’s thing and then turn your iPhone completely off and then back on again.

You may have to wait a few minutes for your SIM to be recognised.

Step 1.

The first thing to check is that iTunes is updated (as of writing, the most up to date is 9.1.1.12) & your device is on the firmware as specified above.

To check iTunes;

Go to the toolbar and select Help > About iTunes

To check your device;

Tap Settings > General > About, make sure that it’s the correct Firmware as outlined above under Version.

If you’re not on the correct Firmware, update your device through iTunes.

Step 2.

Download Spirit.  Right click the .exe and choose Properties.  Under the Compatibility tab, make sure Compatibility Mode is toggled on and that Windows 98/ME is selected, click OK.

Make sure your device is plugged in via. USB and run Spirit.exe

Click the Jailbreak button.

Wait for your device to reboot and you have a Jailbroken device (check for Cydia to verify)!  Enjoy & please don’t forget to lock down root access with a new password !

Stream Your Media and Share Files with Orb

To stream your media and share files:

1. Download and install Orb on the PC from which you want to share files (you can do this from more than one PC.)

2. Set up your account (which you’ll use when logging in to Orb’s online interface.)

3. Select the folders you want to share.

4. Now, from a different computer, log in to Orb’s online interface.

5. From here you can view connected Webcams, play audio and video, and view photos and documents. From anywhere in the world.

I find the interface a little “clunky” but it works and, given bandwidth limitations, it works well.

Here I can see my folders on the PC from which I’m sharing data.

Bonus: View Your Files on Your iPhone

If you have an iPhone, Orb provides a dedicated app. The app is $10, but worth it if you want to view your data on the go. Here’s some screenshots of it in action:

What SSH’ing your device will allow, is customizing almost every part of your device.

A working Wi-Fi connection will be required for this guide.

Step.1

Go ahead and open Cydia on your device.  When Cydia has started, tap Search.

Tap the search box and type; automatic ssh

Tap Automatic SSH from the search results.  On the next screen tap Install at the top right of the screen.

Confirm or queue the installation.  Once installed wait for the device to finish reloading data and return to Cydia.

Step 2.

Head over here to get the latest release of WinSCP (at time of writing 4.2.5) for Windows.  Install as usual.  (XP,Vista & 7 compatible)

Step 3.

We need to know the IP address of the device, so, tap Settings > Wi-Fi > The Arrow next to your connection.  The first set of numbers, is the address we need.  Make a note of this number.

Step 4.

Open up WinSCP, in the left pane, make sure that Stored sessions is selected.  On the right, click New.

Step 5.

Under Session, type out;

Host name = Your IP address

User name = root

Password = alpine

Leave everything else as default.

Click Save, name your session, leave the Save password check box unchecked and hit OK.

Step 6.

I’m using an iPhone 3G for this guide so the steps depicted herein will be iPhone 3G.

First up is to make sure that your device is on firmware 3.1.2.

To do this tap: Settings > General > About.

Under Version, make sure that it’s 3.1.2.  If not, update your device through iTunes.

Step 2.

Next is to head over to here to pick up the latest BlackRa1n download.  Click the Windows logo to download the executable (XP, Vista & 7 compatible).

Step 3.

Make sure to close iTunes and to leave the device connected to your PC via. USB.

Step 4.

Run the Blacra1n download, once it’s opened, click make it ra1n.  Go grab a coffee as this may take a few minutes to complete.

Once it has completed, on your device, find the new icon blackra1n and tap it.  On the next screen you’ll have a choice of 3 installations.  Cydia is the popular package installer by Saurik, Rock is cleaner and quicker than Cydia (though personally untested) & sn0w will unlock your phone  to be used with any carrier.  Choose your packages and install them.

Once it’s finished, find the Cydia/Rock icon and start using your device freely!

Returning to default:

You’ll need to restore your device to factory settings in iTunes to un-jailbreak your device.

To do this, connect your device to your PC via. USB and fire up iTunes.

In the left pane of iTunes; under DEVICES, click your device.  In the main pane under Version; click Restore.

I think it’s best to not save the settings and just start completely fresh by clicking Don’t Back Up.

Confirm your actions by clicking Restore and the device will now be restored to factory state.

I just downloaded the free Dragon Dictation iPhone app. It is really cool.

Here’s how it works:

After installing and launching the app, you tap a button that says, “Record.” You then speak your message — there’s a limit of about 20 seconds, perfect for a text or quick email recording. After you’re done recording the message, you click done, & then your message is sent to Dragon’s servers, where it is translated into text and then a few seconds later, delivered to your phone.

It’s not perfect, as it added an “at” that I didn’t say.

If you find that the dictation is wrong, you can easily edit it by clicking the keyboard button.

And then email, text, or copy it to your clipboard for later pasting.

There’s been a lot of hype about “cloud computing” and being able to use a limited-capacity terminal or mobile device leverage the power of dozens of Gigs of RAM and multi-quad core processors etc. This is the first time that I’ve experienced it. And I like it!

There’s not much else to say. I’ll update this post if I learn more.

There was some previous interest for Windows Forums on the iPhone and to be honest, I was hoping something like this would come along because I didn’t want to customize the forums myself only to find a professional solution was in the works. I have no idea how long this app has been out, but after a search for “phpbb” (the software on which Windows Forums runs) on the Apple App Store, this was the only solution I could find.

Please note: In this guide, I show you the Lite version of the app. You can buy the normal version for $0.99 USD, which enables private messaging and removes the “Posted with TouchBB Lite” message at the bottom of each post (well, probably, but I haven’t tried.)

To access Windows Forums from your iPhone:

1. Go to the app store and download TouchBB Lite.
2. Open the app, click accounts, and click Add. Use the following information:
   • Access URL: http://forum.mintywhite.com
   • Username: Your Windows Forums username (don’t have one?)
   • Password: Same as your forum password.
3. Now click Forum and you can view Windows Forums.

I wish I could say that this is free, but none of the free options were high enough quality for me to recommend. That being said, it is by far the best solution for remoting into your Windows machine. Whether you are a gadget lover who likes having the coolest toys, the productivity geek who needs to have multiple solutions to every problem, or even the Windows SYS Admin who wants to be prepared…. just in case; if you need the best solution to remote in, I recommend Jaadu. It’s 25 bucks, which for an iPhone app isn’t cheap, but if you need remote desktop access it’s 25 dollars well-spent.

I’d write up a step-by-step of how to install it on Windows, but Jaadu already beat me to it with great Vista & XP guides already written up.
