PROS: Quick installation and updates. Three scan options (Quick, Full, Custom) provide easy control and total protection. Real-time scanning is unobtrusive and thorough. Small system footprint with low CPU and memory usage even mid-scan. Supported by Microsoft, a company committed to keeping Windows as secure as possible. No advertisements with MSE add icing to the cake. CONS: If your PC is not on at the start of the scheduled scan, it often wont pick up when you turn your PC on, which means you can go two or more weeks (using the standard schedule) without a full virus scan. VERDICT: I use this on all my PCs and always put it on friends’ PCs if they have an expired version of Norton, McAfee etc. If you’re one of the shrinking group that doesn’t have this installed already, give it a try! PROS: Along with most modern web browsers, Avira comes with phishing protection (WebGuard), which helps protect you from inadvertently giving away your personal information while browsing online. CONS: When testing, I found it gave a false positive for a utility that I’ve used for years. I know it’s not actually a virus because I coded it myself; perhaps it didn’t like my rushed coding! Bugs you about upgrading the full version (although not as much as AVG.) VERDICT: Avira comes with all the standard anti-virus features and uses very little resources. If you’re the kind of person who uses email, browses the web, works with office documents, and not much else, this might be a good choice for you. PROS: “WebRep” protects you from unwanted sharing of personal information via phishing attempts. This feature also comes with Avira and can save you the cost and time resulting in losing your identity. Provides email protection with select email clients. IM shield protects you from vulnerabilities when using Instant Messaging software. CONS: Busy, dark interface. Multiple prompts to upgrade. Not much else! VERDICT: Solid all-rounder designed for the tech user who doesn’t mind lots of options and superfluous information. VERSION REVIEWED: 6.0.1367 DOWNLOAD: Avast Free Antivirus

Comodo Antivirus

PROS: Couples well with Comodo Firewall and provides excellent anti-virus protection. The auto sandbox feature ensures a detectedvirus will never get loose on your PC. CONS: Somewhat complicated interface. Please be careful when you install the application. Using Comodo as your DNS will protect you if a site is spoofed; however, it’s important to know that you will be sending the names of each domain (i.e. mintywhite.com) you visit for name resolution. VERDICT: I don’t recommend this software for new users; however, if you’re tech savvy Comodo and Avast! are more likely to satisfy your virus fighting needs over MSE and Avira. These two almost made the list but each fell short in different areas: AVG, as always, runs slowly and comes with ads (that you can disable.) Panda is an excellent program but always lagged, sat idle during scans for me (it also comes with an unwanted Yahoo toolbar that you have to uncheck to not install.) Panda nearly made the top list for 2012 but was beaten by four great contenders (Panda joined three of the current top four back in 2010.)

PROS: A simple application that lets you control multiple PCs with one keyboard and mouse. The concept isn’t new but the execution is clean and simple and simple file drag and drop as well as seamless copy/paste make this a great tool. CONS: None VERDICT: This is even easier to use than Synergy and InputDirector. If you want a no-frills solution to a virtual KVM (minus the video switching), this application will almost certainly satisfy. PRICE: Free VERSION REVIEWED: 2.1.0.9 DOWNLOAD: Mouse without Borders

We’ve reviewed a couple of virtual-KVMs (keyboard, video, mouse controllers), technically KMs, on Windows Guides: Synergy and InputDirector and they both work well. This time, we bring you another option: Microsoft Garage Mouse without Borders.

Mouse without Borders (MWB) takes the agony out of setting multiple PCs with one keyboard and mouse. You don’t need to worry about IP addresses, network names etc. It doesn’t really get much easier than this. With that said, here’s how to set up MWB for the first time:

1. Download and install Mouse without Borders

2. Start the Program and click No

3. Write down the security code and computer name:

4. Now install Mouse without Borders on your second PC and, instead of clicking No, click Yes. When prompted, type the security code and computer name provided on your first PC. Click Link.

5. Now you are ready to control two (or more) PCs with your mouse and keyboard:

Once set up, MWB doesn’t need any more configuration. However, if you link multiple PCs (each with their own monitor on the same desk), you might want to re-order them to match their physical footprint.

1. In the System Tray, right click the MWB icon and click Settings

2. Here you can drag and drop the order of machines:

3. Click the Other Options tab to configure keyboard shortcuts (you’ll want to at least use the Switch between machines shortcut to save time and help focus on one PC at a time.)

You can take screen captures from connected PCs using “Get Screen Capture from“. This is useful if you have a download running and want to monitor it periodically or if you want to, you know, “spy” on your own PCs.

You can even configure your logon screen… perhaps it’s a way to tell which PC you are on—even if it’s locked. To do so, right click the MWB icon and click Personalize Logon Screen and choose a screen (In the System Tray.) Voila!

My only gripe is that I couldn’t set up my second PC via RDP. This is, of course, by design so you don’t distort reality and cause funky things to happen… I’m just lazy and I really didn’t want to actually go to the PC to install it. So, I used Team Viewer…

The easiest way – WinCDEmu

If you need a simple solution to mount an ISO image, this is the best that you can have - WinCDEmu. WinCDEmu is an open-source CD/DVD/BD emulator which allows you to mount optical disc images with just a few clicks, and you can easily unmount them.

Installation is really simple. Just click download WinCDEmu, double click the downloaded file and click Install. Once you are done with the installation settings and you are almost there. Windows Installer will most probably ask for the installation of SysProgs Storage Controllers driver – don’t worry, just install it. And that’s it.

How to mount ISO image?

To mount an ISO image, just double click on the ISO image file. And you are done. Isn’t that amazing? If you need some extra options (choosing virtual drive letter, disable autorun etc.) for the mounting, right click on the ISO image, then choose Select drive letter & mount, and a small dialog will appear. Click OK after you done with the settings and the image file will be mounted immediately.

And to unmount ISO image?

Just double click on the same ISO image file! It’s really this simple. Alternatively, you can right click on the virtual drive and select Eject.

What’s more?

Even though it is open source and free, WinCDEmu is an excellent piece of nifty tool.

• No rebooting is required after installation
• Release drive letter when not in use
• Portable version is available

One more thing…

With WinCDEmu, you can also create ISO image file for your data disc (eg. Microsoft Windows installation disc, Microsoft Office installation disc etc.) as a backup or for future use. Simply insert the disc to your optical drive, then right click on it in Windows Explorer, and select Create ISO image. The next thing you know is your data disc has turned into an ISO image file.

TuneUp Utilities is a long-standing member of the PC tweaking programs club and they’ve continued to improve their product, at a steady pace, year after year. For 2012, they’ve introduced Economy Mode, which helps save battery life—keeping you connected for longer while you’re mobile. This is the only new major feature this year; however, the program has been updated with more tips and tricks, revisions to previous tweaks, and UI improvements to help you work your way around this powerful collection of tools.

TuneUp Utilities Overview

By telling TuneUp your computing preferences (e.g. what level of visual effects you like) and information it may not be able to determine alone (e.g. Internet connection type and speeds), it can customize your computer for best performance according to your needs:

TuneUp will, at first, offer you many performance-enhancing changes and tools. Don’t worry, it wont take you long to get through all the suggestions, and you’ll be glad you did afterward. Here’s another example where TuneUp identifies programs you haven’t used in a long time and asks you if you recognize them or not. If you don’t recognize the program, TuneUp will help you determine its purpose and help you disable it (more about that later) or uninstall it:

As with all good optimization programs, you can back out your changes at any time. The TuneUp Rescue Center can help you fix and problems that may be caused by over-zealous clean up.

Disable Programs; Verify their Usefulness by Rating

The Program Decactivator deactivates programs that you currently don’t use. By deactiviating a program, you stop the services and supporting programs that are run by it. If you need some of these programs occasionally, it could be tedious to uninstall and reinstall these programs again and again. The Program Deactivator is designed to “pause” a program until you need it again. I deactivated iTunes (which tends to slow down my PC), plugged in my iPhone, and TuneUp popped up to let me know iTunes had, in an instant, been reactivated for use again — easy!

Not sure which programs to deactivate? TuneUp comes with a user-driven rating system that lets you rate the programs you use and view the ratings left by others:

I also spoke to one of the founders of the company, Tibor Schiemann, and he verified that no personal or identifiable information is sent in this process and that your anonymity is high priority.

TuneUp Economy Mode

TuneUp Economy mode changes system settings, disables hardware, and helps your PC run more conservatively to help save battery life. If you’re someone who is on the go all the time, you know how much an extra 20 minutes of battery life can help when you’re, for example: stuck on a plane; finishing a report just before class; or cramming a revision session in outside the exam hall. Economy Mode can be accessed with just two clicks (click TuneUp in the system tray and click Economy Mode) and it will instantly start saving you power.

Test Results:

I tried TuneUp Economy Mode on my wife’s netbook:

Setup: New installation Windows 7 Ultimate w/SP1 and VLC Player. Battery fully charged.

Test: Play HD (720p) MKV on loop until battery drains

Standard Mode: 2 hours and 15 minutes

Windows Power saver mode: 2 hours and 23 minutes

Economy Mode: 2 hours and 53 minutes (a 28% improvement! over standard mode)

The results of this test are fairly significant; use of Economy Mode is a far better option than Windows “Power saver” mode or no power savings.

New in TuneUp 2011 was the Tuning status bar; this year, it’s been improved to be a little more intuitive and help you understand what needs to be done to improve performance:

TuneUp Utilities Settings

As each utility within TuneUp has it’s own configuration, you can quickly get lost in settings screens and even change the same settings twice or three times through different panels without realizing. This year, TuneUp Utilities comes with a unified settings console to help you configure each tool in a central location. While this isn’t really an exciting feature, it really does help you organize yourself a little more and take a more systematic approach to your optimizing.

Other notable changes include:

• Enhancements to the program deactivator; now the assistant reactivates programs for use and then automatically deactivates them again for you. Read more about the Program Deactivator in the overview above.
• A modified dashboard UI with integrated settings buttons for each utility as well as a switch for the three performance modes

If you have more than a couple of PCs in your home, it’s easy to get confused and forget which PC you’re working on. For example, on my current home network, it have the following Windows PCs: D7UH, D7UG, LXHM, L7UR, L7UM, PI2R, and PI3R. After a few remote desktop connections, I would get lost without BgInfo.

BgInfo shows key information about your PC right on the desktop. BgInfo is a standalone executable and can be pinned to your Taskbar. Then, when you’re on any PC, you can launch it (if it isn’t already running) to bring up information like: computer name, MAC addresses, computer name, operating system and service pack etc.

To display key information on your desktop:

1. Download BgInfo and put it in a permanent folder (recommendation: C:\Program Files\BgInfo\ or in your DropBox for multi-PC use)

2. Pin BgInfo.exe to the taskbar (how to pin a program to the taskbar)

3. Start BgInfo and select the information you want displayed:

Sparklines – What’s that ?

I thought you’d say that. Well, let’s for argument sake say you did. In short, Sparklines are tiny diagrams or charts that you can insert into your worksheet at the end of a row or column to project trends or compare statistics. Each Sparkline is so small that it takes up no space at all. One Cell is all it takes, making it a brilliant visual help to monitor your numbers.

One usage that comes to mind is to monitor your sales progress during a month, week, quarter. Or, maybe if you have an Excel sheet to monitor your stock options, you can quickly see how they are doing suing small Sparklines.

Sparklines are located in the middle of the Insert Ribbon with three standard lines to choose from. Highlight the area you would like to monitor and choose your Sparkline of choice. I’m sure you’ll wonder, however you managed without.

Here’s How

This Quick-Tip works in both Excel 2007 and 2010 (and perhaps in some older versions as well). The only differences between the two is the different Office Buttons. In Excel 2007 the Office button is a round Windows button, where as in 2010 it’s a green tab.

1. In Excel 2010, Click the Green FILE-tab
   In Excel 2007, Click the Round Office Button
2. In Excel 2010, Choose Options in the bottom part of the left panel.
   In Excel 2007, Choose Excel options in the lower right corner of the Office File Menu

Auslogics BoostSpeed Features

Like many other programs that make changes to speed up your PC, BoostSpeed checks your PC for Registry errors, junk files, disk errors, and checks for fragmented files:

Even though Windows has a built in disk checker and defragmenting tool and even though invalid registry entries (for the most part) and junk files don’t really slow down your PC, a one-click approach to fixing these issues is very nice.

Thankfully, BoostSpeed has other features to boast such as:

• System Advisor: Detects problems with your PC and makes recommendations based upon what the issue is and what solutions are available
• Free Up Space: Checks for duplicate files to free up disk space
• Software Control: Control which programs start with–and thus slow down the start up of–your PC

Usually when reviewing Backup Sofware, we talk about DVDs. This time I’ve reviewed a true Blue-Ray Ripper that promise to be “a powerful Blu-ray tool to crack AACS and BD+ protection from Blu-ray disc, CSS encryption from DVD. It allows to backup Blu-ray content to quality lossless MKV files and rip Blu-ray/DVD to almost all popular video and audio formats seamlessly and effortlessly.” Well, don’t they all ?

Interface

The interface is clean and tidy. It takes about 30+ seconds to know how it works. This is often where a truly great program stands out from the lesser ones. When the people behind a program take the end user into consideration they usually get a program that can be used straight out of the box and one that will be used over and over. In that manner, Aimersoft has scored jackpot. Except for one thing. At first glance Aimersoft Blu-Ray Ripper looks to be a movie copy and converter program. Studying the interface for a few more seconds, reveal a more “hidden” feature, the Disk Backup Feature (by “hidden” I mean, not as visible, it’s just a button). This feature let you take complete backups of your Blu-Ray (and DVD) disks, and should you be so lucky (or rich enough) to own a BluRay Burner, well …

Why Aimersoft has chosen to “hide” this feature in the interface is beyond me, because this is the feature that; to me is the most interesting. The Convert-to-Other-Formats is more of a plus. The ability to store a copy of the entire Blu-Ray Disk makes sense, because it protects your investment. When and if the disk gets scratched or damaged beyond repair.

Creating Backups

Creating a disk Backup is very easy. Insert the Disk, and Click “Backup”. Be aware that you need at least 20GB of free diskspace to be able to make a backup copy.

Converting Movies

Making a copy (and converting) it to another format is truly easy.  Insert the disk and let the program scan the disk for you. As with other competing programs,  Aimersoft Blu-Ray Ripper displays a list of the available movieclips on the disk and let you choose which ones to backup. The main movie is selected by default.

Once you have the movies selected, choose the target format by selecting a predefined Profile (Such as iPhone, HTC, Blackberry, iPad, PSP etc.) or you may define your own. At this stage you may press Convert and start the process but there are a few more options for you to choose from. Clicking the Settings-Button next to the Profile Selection Button, will give you a few more options.

Crop (available on the interface menu)

One of the biggest problems when it comes to converting a movie from one format (or gadget) to another is the different screen sizes. On a small screen like the PSP, wide black bars can be quite annoying, making the actual movie size too small for comfort. I hate it when it required a magnifier of sorts to see the movie. The embedded Crop function solves this perfectly by letting you manually adjust the movie image size to fit your preferences.

Image Adjust  (available on the Interface Menu)

Sometimes a movie can get quite dark (I’m not referring to the plot), which is fine in a movie theater, but not on your PSP, iPhone and whatnot.  Aimersoft let you adjust the image brightness and contrast to better suit your needs.

Watermark  (available in the Crop Menu)

A functionality that is great for any corporate (or home) movies is the ability to add a watermark (like a logo) to the converted movie. This is especially a great feature if you plan to distribute a movie on YouTube or any similar platform.

Audio settings  (available in Settings)

Different Profiles, gives you different Audio Settings. Some Profiles have different Audio Settings to choose from. The HD Movie Profile gives you AC3 sound with the option to use Surround or Stereo (depending on your Movie), the Xvid Profile will convert the sound to Mp3, PSP Profile use AAC Encoder using Mono as optional. If you prefer to have other settings than the Profile Defaults you have to create your own Profile.

FileSplitting   (available in Settings)

In the Settings Window, you may also choose to split files by time or filesize.

Subtitles  (available on the Interface Menu)

If you are converting a foreign movie, you may want to add subtitles. Be aware that, the subtitles are embedded into the movie, and not stored as separate files.

The Test

In my test I tried to backup (and convert) a store bought movie (from Disney). These disks are known to cause backup problems due to different copy protection features and is therefor a great test subject. I also Selected the HD Movie Platform, making the copy viewable on my BenQ Projector. I added subtitles and used standard Crop settings.

The conversion process is promised to be swift and powerful. On my system (64 bit AMD Athlon, Windows 7, 4GB RAM) it took about 2,5 hours to complete. On the upside,  Aimersoft Blu-Ray Ripper, used little CPU power, and very little RAM (about 120 000K). It did not render my computer useless, and I was able to go about my business as usual. And that, to me is very important. Too many good programs like this, use so much resources that you have to run them at night when you don’t use the computer for anything else.

The Result

The finished product was superb. A clean and sharp image, with crisp sound. The subtitles was not embedded into the movie, but was added as a separate file.  I’m not too fond about the embedded subtitles. One reason is that I cannot switch the subtitles off during playback, another is the font size, which I think is too large. Another thing I discovered was that the program didn’t warn med about the different Subtitles available for my language, so I ended up selecting the subtitles for the Directors Comment, which lets say made the entire movie unwatchable, seeing as I cannot turn them off.

The Wish List

• Native 64 bit support would  make my day ( Although 2,5 hours to complete may be acceptable speed, I would like to see it even faster).
• Better control with Subtitles (Font, size etc) and the option to save it as a separate file
• Option to use original Audio, no matter which profile I choose

Conclusion

The price is a bit steep (almost $50), but in the long run, it keeps your BluRays and DVDs safe. If this program saves you from having to re-buy your entire movie collection (should anything happen to it) then the price isn’t all that bad.

The program is easy to use and offers everything you need in one package (Except for a large enough Hard-Drive). It produce a truly lossless result. Images are clean and crisp and the audio is perfect (with no audio sync problems). You will never need another backup/ripping program for as long as there are BluRay disks.
